We still have to sort out the impres\u00adsions, expe\u00adri\u00adences (and photos) we gath\u00adered, but here is a first brief update for all those inter\u00adested. Detailed infor\u00adma\u00adtion, pictures and videos will follow in the next few weeks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Our short summary: Wow. What the founder Naume and Kenneth, her former prot\u00e9g\u00e9 and current head of the facility, have achieved with their team has far exceeded our expec\u00adta\u00adtions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kenneth and Naume are working system\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcally and purpose\u00adfully towards their vision for HOREMI: giving chil\u00addren a chance. By giving them a digni\u00adfied start in life and a good educa\u00adtion according to their indi\u00advidual abil\u00adi\u00adties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This plan is pursued with incred\u00adible energy, confi\u00addence, tenacity, compe\u00adtence and joy. Our spon\u00adsor\u00adships and dona\u00adtions work every day and fulfill their purpose 100%.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The expan\u00adsion of the school is progressing prag\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcally and every euro donated is quickly put to good use. The class\u00adrooms are currently being plas\u00adtered on the inside at the weekend, while work continues on the outside during the week (at school time).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lessons in six class levels (three pre-school, three elemen\u00adtary school) are underway. Around 80 chil\u00addren, including 10 from the HOREMI orphanage, are already sitting on the self-made school desks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The educa\u00adtional goals are ambi\u00adtious and the curricula for the various classes are devel\u00adoped with high stan\u00addards and great care. Kenneth in partic\u00adular knows from his own expe\u00adri\u00adence how impor\u00adtant a good educa\u00adtion is and does every\u00adthing he can to bring the school up to a top level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Thanks to our spon\u00adsor\u00adships, the orphanage, the nucleus of HOREMI, can offer the 30 or so kids a digni\u00adfied and child-friendly life by Ugandan stan\u00addards. Even if we often had to adjust our Western ideas in the face of reality. There is no elec\u00adtricity on site, no running water, beds are shared. And the diet (lots of maize, a little rice, some beans or cabbage and some\u00adtimes 10 grams of meat) is aimed solely to fill the belly. So there is still a lot to do.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The most impor\u00adtant thing is that the chil\u00addren are doing well. the water fetching is done by the chil\u00addren. the HOREMI spirit: from zero to school in three months. Construc\u00adtion starts at the end of October, school starts at the end of January. Go, HOREMI!<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Successes and Challenges<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Three more spon\u00adsor\u00adships were taken on during our stay alone. One of our most impor\u00adtant goals \u2014 to provide every child with a spon\u00adsor\u00adship and thus the foun\u00adda\u00adtion for a start in life \u2014 has there\u00adfore almost been achieved. Zamu, Samuel, Olivia, Ajan and Shukran do not yet have a sponsor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A major chal\u00adlenge for HOREMI is financing the day-to-day running of the school: teachers\u2019 salaries, school mate\u00adrials, exam\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion fees, lunch, support staff such as the \u201cwater man\u201d and much more need to be paid every month. Currently, school fees only cover part of these fixed costs. One reason for this is that HOREMI also enables very poor fami\u00adlies to attend school. They pay no or only very low fees. Secondly, the school is still brand new and fami\u00adlies with better finan\u00adcial means still have to be won over by the high quality of the school and the corre\u00adsponding word-of-mouth adver\u00adtising.
