October 16: School uniforms made by HOREMI<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The third term is underway, the HOREMI school kids are studying hard \u2014 and on top of that, they look good in their new uniforms. But where do the beau\u00adtiful blue and white dresses, shirts and pants actu\u00adally come from? The answer: they are all \u201cmade by HOREMI\u201d and are created in sewing courses run by Naume\u2019s daughter Teddy \u2014 and by Sandra, who grew up at HOREMI and now even has her own tailoring store. Every weekend and during the vaca\u00adtions, young appren\u00adtice tailors take measure\u00adments, cut, sew and hem under their guid\u00adance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Girls \u2014 but also boys \u2014 from the age of 14 can take part in the HOREMI sewing program. There are currently five to seven appren\u00adtice tailors from the orphanage \u2014 and they have made more than 60 school uniforms in the last few months! Primarily for HOREMI school\u00adchildren, of course, but also as commis\u00adsioned work for other schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the clothes are sustain\u00adable: so that the kids don\u2019t grow out of them too quickly, the sizes are slightly larger at the begin\u00adning and the hems allow for later exten\u00adsions. This is not the only reason why the almost 9 euros per uniform \u2014 although a lot of money for a Ugandan family \u2014 are worth the price. All HOREMI school\u00adchildren are equally well dressed and visibly part of a commu\u00adnity. By the way: as a reward and moti\u00adva\u00adtion, the \u201cbrave little tailors\u201d are allowed to keep a small profit from the clothes sale and spend it on them\u00adselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HOREMI would like to take on even more appren\u00adtice tailors in its sewing program, including from the village commu\u00adnity. The head of the orphanage, Naume, explains: \u201cMany young women here could urgently use such training, but cannot afford the neces\u00adsary mate\u00adrials. And unfor\u00adtu\u00adnately, HOREMI\u2019s funds are also limited.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

September 4: HOREMI is number one!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After the HOREMI Junior School had already passed its first offi\u00adcial inspec\u00adtions by the author\u00adi\u00adties with top marks, six more inspec\u00adtors were now on site. They too could hardly believe what the school had achieved in just six months of oper\u00ada\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were certi\u00adfied that our stan\u00addard of educa\u00adtion is higher than in any other school in the munic\u00adi\u00adpality of Lubira or the sub-district of Buyanga,\u201d reports school manager Kenneth. \u201cOr in short: we are number one among all 46 schools in Buyanga.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

September 2: It \u201chails\u201d good grades <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Curious to know how the second trimester final exams mentioned in the last post went? The answer: great! So kudos to the teachers for the perfect prepa\u00adra\u00adtion and execu\u00adtion \u2014 and to the pupils for their great perfor\u00admance improve\u00adments and good grades. Kids from the HOREMI orphanage were also able to shine: Lilian and Karen were best and second best in the 2nd primary school class, Isaac was second best in the 1st class. And the two youngest HOREMI prot\u00e9g\u00e9s, Rayan and Shukran, scored 465 and 464 out of a possible 500 points respec\u00adtively in the preschool. Bravo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prin\u00adcipal Naume is corre\u00adspond\u00adingly satis\u00adfied: \u201cOur primary school pupils are now known for their ability to speak English, write and read well, inter\u00adpret texts and answer ques\u00adtions inde\u00adpen\u00addently across all three classes. No child in any other school can do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can go on like this! Because on September 9, the third and final term of the first year of HOREMI Junior School already begins \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 14: Examination before the vacation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Concen\u00adtrated faces, heads bent low over exer\u00adcise books, the occa\u00adsional thoughtful pencil chew or sigh \u2014 does that remind you of anything? Yes, exams were never the best thing about school. But before the vaca\u00adtions can begin, the 80 or so pupils at HOREMI Junior School must first prove what they have learned in the last trimester. (A school year in Uganda consists of three terms.) We are keeping our fingers crossed for them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Copying is not an option. The tests take place in neat rows on the veranda.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

August 9: The teachers at HOREMI Junior School<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s high time to intro\u00adduce the dedi\u00adcated team at HOREMI Junior School in person: Six full-time teachers look after the six class levels \u2014 from pre-school levels 1 to 3 (Baby Class, Middle Class, Upper Class) to the primary school levels (Primary P1 to P3). There is also a school cook. They all do their best every day to satisfy the chil\u00addren\u2019s hunger for knowl\u00adedge \u2014 and to fill their stom\u00adachs during the breaks. HOREMI has to finance all salaries, including board and lodging, from its own resources due to a lack of state aid. And is there\u00adfore happy to receive any dona\u00adtion, such as a \u201cteacher spon\u00adsor\u00adship<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 8: Music is life!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>Singing, dancing, moving: All of this is an impor\u00adtant part of daily school lessons. It not only promotes the kids\u2019 musi\u00adcality, but also their sense of commu\u00adnity \u2014 and they learn and expe\u00adri\u00adence their culture through it. But above all, it\u2019s great fun for them, as you can clearly hear and see in the video below. Music is life! And so, on the one hand, learning content is directly linked to singing and move\u00adment, making it easier to remember what has been learned. And on the other hand, singing and dancing is of course a wonderful relax\u00adation program between lessons. Go HOREMI!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
