Thanks to your dona\u00adtions, the 30 chil\u00addren at the HOREMI orphanage were able to have a very nice Christmas on December 24, 2024! A small festive meal and sweet drinks (the \u201chigh\u00adlights\u201d for kids in Uganda) could be financed. In everyday life, however, meals usually consist of simple maize porridge with beans or cabbage, and only once or twice a week is there meat broth with traces of meat and a little rice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chil\u00addren were delighted with well-filled plates and sweet lemon\u00adades at Christmas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

No wonder the festive mood imme\u00addi\u00adately rose at Christmas when large pots of steaming meat and fish were carried into the class room, which had been converted into a banquet hall, and their contents were distrib\u00aduted. There was also plenty of rice (which is much more expen\u00adsive than maize in Uganda), pota\u00adtoes and yes, even a great rarity: noodles! In the end, every single plate was filled to the brim and \u2014 of course \u2014 every\u00adthing was eaten in no time.<\/p>\n\n\n

There was only one thing still missing at Christmas and the begin\u00adning of the year: more light so that everyone could read, learn, play or work, sew and do hand\u00adi\u00adcrafts after sunset (around 6 p.m. all year round). The only avail\u00adable light sources at HOREMI are still candles, torches and a few solar lamps and flash\u00adlights. An old car battery and a shaky solar panel are used to charge the lights; there is no real power supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why we launched an appeal for dona\u00adtions for a solar system before Christmas, which can provide the most basic elec\u00adtricity needs all year round. There is no shortage of solar energy. And a suffi\u00adciently sized solar system with battery storage is avail\u00adable in Uganda from around 5,000 euros. During our next visit to HOREMI at the end of February, we want to do more to find a suit\u00adable system on site. We have about half of the budget for this, and our current goal is to collect the other half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
