As there are no rooms for guests on site, we usually stay in one of the few hotels in the town of Iganga, about 25 kilo\u00adme\u00adtres away. This time, however, I had the oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to stay overnight at HOREMI and get to know the lives of the chil\u00addren and the HOREMI team even better.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Karin and Stefan had trav\u00adelled to western Uganda to exchange ideas with another social project (\u201cGive a goat Africa\u201d), I stayed with Naume, Kenneth and the chil\u00addren at the orphanage for another three days. Without the comforts that are avail\u00adable in the hotels in Iganga, I shared one of the chil\u00addren\u2019s rickety bunk beds with Naume. The room with its unplas\u00adtered brick walls and corru\u00adgated iron roof was locked at night for secu\u00adrity. Not only the door, but also the windows, so it was incred\u00adibly hot. It only cooled down a little towards morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained waiting for me as a shower substi\u00adtute, I realised that I had obvi\u00adously had a pretty good rest anyway and had slept through the sounds of 30 chil\u00addren getting up! Lessons had already started and the chil\u00addren were all sitting in their class\u00adrooms, freshly washed and in their school uniforms, repeating in loud voices the content given by the respec\u00adtive teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained pancakes in the morning. He sells them from the small brick store at the entrance to the school\u00adyard to all the villagers who pass the school on the foot\u00adpath at this time of day. And the deli\u00adcious African pancakes sell like fresh pret\u00adzels. My break\u00adfast consisted of two of these warm cr\u00eapes and a cup of instant coffee. I remember this Ugandan \u2018petit deje\u00aduner\u2019 sitting on the stairs of the dormi\u00adtory in the morning sun, with the voices of the students in the back\u00adground, as a very peaceful pancakes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, that was the impres\u00adsion that has stayed with me: how peaceful and grounded the atmos\u00adphere on the HOREMI grounds is. When the older kids were playing foot\u00adball on the large meadow in the late after\u00adnoon after lessons and the smaller ones were playing on the swings or the slide, it was in such a relaxed atmos\u00adphere that I haven\u2019t expe\u00adri\u00adenced with chil\u00addren in my home envi\u00adron\u00adment for a long time. Despite all the diffi\u00adcul\u00adties of everyday life and the mostly trau\u00admatic biogra\u00adphies of the chil\u00addren, the mood during these after\u00adnoon hours was peaceful and care\u00adfree. It was so good to see that HOREMI means some\u00adthing to these chil\u00addren that is normal for us: safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spielen bei Horemi\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qzarr4IbAgo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the three days, I was able to expe\u00adri\u00adence the evening atmos\u00adphere on the village square and the starry sky over the peanut fields and saw large horn\u00adbills running through the manioc plan\u00adta\u00adtions in the centre of the village. Watching the concen\u00adtrated faces of parents regis\u00adtering their chil\u00addren for school and being coun\u00adselled by Kenneth in the head\u00admas\u00adter\u2019s office. With Bumali, the boy in the wheel\u00adchair who strug\u00adgles with severe spas\u00adticity, prac\u00adtising targeted grasping and releasing under the guid\u00adance of a phys\u00adio\u00adther\u00ada\u00adpist friend. But HOREMI is on its way thanks to the vision and tenacity of the people there, as well as the support of the people here in Germany.
