School life at HOREMI is becoming more vibrant and diverse every year. The second school building is now complete and in use. Over 240 chil\u00addren have been attending classes here since the first trimester of 2026!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, around 180 chil\u00addren attended HOREMI Junior School. This year, the school has already been able to admit an addi\u00adtional 60 chil\u00addren from the surrounding villages\u2014an increase of one-third!

Thir\u00adteen teachers ensure that the students can learn success\u00adfully and enjoy\u00adably. Six teachers work with the youngest chil\u00addren, starting at around age four, in the three preschool classes, while seven teachers teach the elemen\u00adtary school grades P1 through P5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting next year, we plan to expand to all seven elemen\u00adtary school grades up to P7 and, as part of this, register as an educa\u00adtional insti\u00adtu\u00adtion at the state level. However, there are still some admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtive, construc\u00adtion, and finan\u00adcial hurdles to over\u00adcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grounds surrounding the old and new school build\u00adings have also seen signif\u00adi\u00adcant improve\u00adments. With a great deal of gardening skill and even more hard work, trees were planted and small hedges were estab\u00adlished around the green spaces. The trees have grown quickly and now provide pleasant shade and protec\u00adtion from the trop\u00adical sun, espe\u00adcially in front of the \u201cold\u201d school building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To give the many school\u00adchildren a chance to clear their heads after studying, get some exer\u00adcise, and really let off some steam during recess, the play\u00adground was expanded and another slide was purchased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The growing number of students poses a major chal\u00adlenge for the school\u2019s modest kitchen. Two cooks now ensure that everyone gets a proper meal during lunch break. Most of the kids still receive a simple, thin porridge. Full meals are avail\u00adable only to the few chil\u00addren whose parents can afford to pay for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another issue is the construc\u00adtion of addi\u00adtional restrooms, which, according to govern\u00adment regu\u00adla\u00adtions, must be sepa\u00adrate for boys and girls. New restroom facil\u00adi\u00adties are there\u00adfore among HOREMI\u2019s most urgent invest\u00adments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first trimester of 2026 had begun in early February\u2014a little later than usual due to the elec\u00adtions in Uganda. Two months have passed since then; a lot of new mate\u00adrial has been covered, and the first midterm exams have taken place. To ensure the chil\u00addren have enough space and quiet (and can\u2019t copy from each other so easily\u2026) during exams, desks and benches are set up along the school build\u00adings and in the court\u00adyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We see that the demand for quality educa\u00adtion continues to grow. Yet far too many people in Uganda still can barely afford an educa\u00adtion. And since the last elec\u00adtions in January, their lives have unfor\u00adtu\u00adnately not gotten any easier. We will soon publish a sepa\u00adrate article detailing which new govern\u00adment measures are making their daily lives and struggle to make ends meet even more diffi\u00adcult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
