We chose it again for this post because, despite HOREMI\u2019s incred\u00adible progress over the past two years, securing a daily supply of food remains a major chal\u00adlenge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 80 percent of the popu\u00adla\u00adtion in East Africa depends directly on agri\u00adcul\u00adture. What is our daily bread is maize porridge in Uganda. And for similar reasons, it is becoming increas\u00adingly expen\u00adsive, just like pret\u00adzels or break\u00adfast rolls here. With the small differ\u00adence that we can manage without pret\u00adzels (if neces\u00adsary), but HOREMI cannot manage without maize. They are keen to become less reliant on dona\u00adtions through their own initia\u00adtives and efforts. This will be achieved through addi\u00adtional farm\u00adland, seeds adapted to local soil condi\u00adtions, sensible irri\u00adga\u00adtion, and other sustain\u00adable methods in crop produc\u00adtion and soil-conserving land use. Further\u00admore, a signif\u00adi\u00adcant increase in crop yields would allow for the sale of more agri\u00adcul\u00adtural prod\u00aducts, thereby gener\u00adating addi\u00adtional income. This repre\u00adsents another impor\u00adtant step toward greater self-suffi\u00adciency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion, we are currently researching local agri\u00adcul\u00adtural training programs to provide the HOREMI team with the best possible support in terms of content, to lay a solid foun\u00adda\u00adtion for the \u201cEigenes Essen\u201d project, and to prepare them for the impacts of climate change. However, the initial costs for training, land leases, seeds, irri\u00adga\u00adtion equip\u00adment, etc., cannot be covered by our current budget.
