About 250 children now attend the HOREMI Junior School. As the student body has grown, so have the government’s requirements regarding the school’s facilities, safety and hygiene.

Since its opening in 2024, the HOREMI School has developed so well that Ugandan authorities are pushing for national registration and comprehensive licensing. To obtain these, HOREMI must meet stricter requirements. And that means additional organizational and financial effort. It’s a good thing the Friends of HOREMI are there…

Better Hygiene and Health Protection for Schoolchildren

The construction of new sanitary facilities on the school grounds has become particularly urgent. There is a need for additional or improved restrooms as well as enclosed washrooms (which did not exist at all until now), with separate facilities for girls and boys. A significant portion of our current aid is therefore being directed toward the construction of new sanitary facilities.

In progress: Soon, the girls and boys will each have their own restrooms and washrooms.

A total of eight additional restrooms for girls and boys, as well as a block with separate restrooms for teachers, are planned. As soon as the funding is secured, things will move quickly, as always: Construction has been underway for about two weeks, and we expect it to be completed by the end of October.

Digging pits—like this one for the new toilet—is hard manual labor in Uganda.

A little “luxury” is allowed: tiles instead of bare concrete floors, as before.

More Living Space for the HOREMI Children

And there’s another construction-related issue that’s been weighing on our minds for quite some time. It concerns the Children’s Home—specifically, the currently cramped living conditions of the HOREMI boys, many of whom are now teenagers. That’s why we’re currently converting and refurbishing a storage building—which was previously unsuitable for residential use—to create an additional dormitory for the “seniors.”

A ruin and former storage room is converted into an additional sleeping area.

Clever: The scaffolding is held in place by holes in the wall, which will be filled in after the work is finished.

Freshly plastered and almost finished: The boys are looking forward to their new sleep house.

Greater Safety for Everyone at HOREMI

The next major construction project will be the complete fencing of the entire property to meet the relevant safety requirements set by the authorities. We are therefore currently working to determine what type of fence is necessary and appropriate for this purpose, as well as what costs HOREMI will incur.

All investments made by the Friends of HOREMI will continue to focus on the well-being of the children at the Children’s Home. It will never be able to exist without donations. The HOREMI School, on the other hand, is intended to stand on its own two feet in the long term. To that end, Kenneth and his team work hard every day on the ground—and we at Friends of HOREMI support them as best we can. This ensures that the school can make a lasting contribution to education in Uganda, which is so important. Thank you to all our donors for your support!
