The school grows brick by brick

On June 18, the starting signal was given for the extension of the HOREMI Junior School. The construction is necessary so that HOREMI can also offer primary school classes P5 to P7, as required by the Ugandan authorities.

Less than four weeks later: around 30,000 bricks have been laid and all the walls of the new school building are in place. The veranda and pillars are currently being erected, then it will be the turn of the roof construction. The 18 windows and five entrance doors for the new rooms — three classrooms, a library and a computer room — have also already been delivered.

The funds required for the building materials and wages — a good 12,000 euros according to current planning — are sent to Uganda in individual tranches via specialized transfer service providers. Sometimes the construction work progresses faster than the transfer of the money. But as soon as the Uganda shillings arrive, the next day’s photos immediately show the progress of the construction work. A total of ten men do their best to make this possible.

New building materials arrive almost daily.

We wondered how HOREMI found the workers so quickly so that they could get started as soon as the first funds were received. Kenneth says: “It’s very easy, a few phone calls and just a short time later the site manager and the helpers are with us. A clear sign that there is never enough work for the many people in the region. In this respect, HOREMI’s construction projects also help to secure a livelihood for families in the surrounding villages for some time to come.

Hand in hand, the men work on the new school building.
Lunch break: he workers fortify themselves with porridge from the school kitchen.

Such positive effects on the community are important and desirable. The school provides them anyway, as children from the surrounding area receive a high-quality education here. As HOREMI also serves as an employer for teachers, harvest workers, night watchmen and, time and again, construction workers, other local people benefit from HOREMI — and therefore from your donations from Germany.

The massive windows have already been delivered and are ready for installation.

We would like to thank our generous donors, look forward to the further construction progress and will keep you up to date!
